Project Management relies on proven repeatable processes and techniques to contribute to positive project results.
If you do not know where you are going, you know neither how to get there, nor when you have arrived.
Therefore, it does not really matter which road is taken or the length of the journey.
A good project plan is like a route map — the destination is clearly spelled out and the best way to get there is chosen before starting.
It depends where you are in the process:
Do you have funding for the project? Do you need project documentation to present to management or the board to get funding approval? Do you need project cost estimation? Do you need help determining or procuring resources? Do you have requirements for the project? Do you need scope definition? What business problem will the project solve? Do you need a project schedule?
It depends on the size, duration and complexity of the project, as well as how many people are involved, and where you are in the process. For example, are you at the beginning, middle, or near the end of the project?
A project manager “keeping it all in his head” can successfully run some projects, but when projects multiply or the manager falls sick so does the project!
Are you managing a project for someone else (your client) then at a very minimum plan on ways to track the definition of the client's requirements and/or assumptions made, the standard of quality agreed upon that will serve the client's purpose, the time available for completion, and the budget for the work.
As projects increase in size and complexity, increasingly sophisticated tools and techniques are available to track each of these core functions. On larger projects, it may be necessary to have trained and dedicated staff attending to each function separately.
Call for a needs assessment to assist with decision making.
Consider the answers to the questions below to begin the thought process:
